Getting Organized for the New Year

Getting organized should align you to the life you want to live.

The new year is a natural time for reflection and renewal. Regardless of how you feel about New Year’s Resolutions, it’s good to check in with yourself once in a while to see how you feel about the life you are currently living, and tweak things that feel off track from where you want to be.

Getting organized should align you to the life you want to live.

Organization helps to clear out the clutter that throws us off our intended path. Clutter can be too much stuff all over the place, general disorganization, over extending yourself with too many priorities, or not having clarity on what you want in the first place.

Effective organization starts with personal reflection.

Start by asking yourself, what’s working / not working in my life right now?

Celebrate and acknowledge yourself for what IS working. Take a neutral approach to noticing what’s not working. (Don’t beat yourself up about it!)

Visualize your Ideal Lifestyle

This is your road map for where you want to go. Ask yourself: What is my ideal day? How do I want my home to feel? How do I want to spend my time? How do I want to feel in my clothes?

Audit your home

Walk through each room of your house. In each room ask yourself: How do I want to use this room? How do I want this room to feel? Is this room set up for the purpose and feel that I want? Open every closet and drawer; ask yourself is this space functional for how I want to use it? Can I find things easily?

Once you have a feel for where you are and where you want to go, you can start to take action.

Make a plan

From the reflection above, decide which things are most important to get organized and create alignment in your life. Would you be satisfied with just cleaning out your junk drawer? Do you want to clean out a whole room? Or are you ready for a full-house reorganization?

Set yourself up for success

Getting organized takes time, so schedule time for yourself to action on your plan. A small project may only take an hour. A whole room may take a full weekend or several hours throughout a month. A full-house reorganization could take 60+ hours of dedicated time.

Let go

Don’t just try to stuff all of your things into labeled bins. Be open to letting go of the things that don’t fit with the life you want.

Get support

Having someone who is good at organizing by your side can help keep the overwhelm at bay and keep you motivated to stay on track. Make sure they act as a neutral party so you are making decisions based on what’s best for you and not influenced by others’ opinions.

No matter the time of year that you want to get started, organization can help you align yourself to the life you want to live. Start with reflection, make a plan, take action, and surround yourself with support. Good luck to you and happy organizing!
